CASE STUDY: St. Jude Cloud, built by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in partnership with Microsoft and DNAnexus, is an online genomics data-sharing and analysis environment for the global research community (https://www.stjude.cloud). Genome sequencing data is a critical resource for studying human genetic variation and its contribution to disease, but the size and complexity of genomics data makes computation, storage, sharing, and collaboration extremely challenging. St. Jude Cloud removes these barriers to discovery by offering cloud-based compute, storage, data mining, analysis, and visualization tools. St. Jude Cloud delivers scalable compute power and storage resources to the global community while providing controlled access to an integrated set of tools for pediatric cancer research. St. Jude Cloud aims to make genomics data, analysis tools, and visualizations easily accessible to scientists and clinicians worldwide to catalyze discovery in the global pediatric disease space.
St. Jude Cloud has three facets: data, tools, and visualization. In the data section, users can request access to and explore data by disease, publication, or genetic mutation. Accessing data in the cloud eliminates the need for error-prone, time-consuming downloads and large amounts of local storage. The tools section allows users to run cloud-optimized bioinformatics workflows to mine, analyze, and visualize data in St. Jude Cloud. The visualizations section provides intuitive, interactive mining and views of the genomics data and analysis results powered by our browser-based visualization engine. Researchers can easily visualize St. Jude data and results of analyses run on their own data.
Evolving cloud technology is transforming global approaches to pediatric cancer research. St. Jude Cloud offers investigators around the world genomics data and analysis tools that will accelerate cures for pediatric cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
