Operators globally are rapidly rolling out 5G, a more versatile and scalable wireless technology than previous generations. By supporting new types of application and operating on a much wider range of frequencies than previous cellular systems, 5G provides a communications foundation for a future world, one of extended reality, autonomous cars, smart cities, wearable computers, and innovations not yet conceived.

5G capabilities, however, depend on versions of the technology and the spectrum in which it is deployed. Initially emphasizing enhanced mobile broadband, only now have standards bodies specified the version that will tackle use cases such as industrial IoT and cellular-vehicle communications.

This presentation will address what features to expect in what timeframe, how LTE and 5G will co-exist, and how best to prepare and plan for the technology.

Specific topics will include:

  • 5G as commercial reality
  • Capabilities relative to specification versions and timeline for availability
  • Spectrum bands for 5G and resulting capability and coverage
  • 5G architecture, including non-standalone (NSA), standalone (SA), and integrated access/backhaul (IAB)
  • Network virtualization and open radio access networks (O-RAN)
  • 5G for Industrial IoT
  • Cellular-vehicle communications (C-V2X)
  • The synergies between AI and 5G
  • Private 5G networks using the Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) band
  • Integration of unlicensed spectrum (NR-U)
