The demand for more power in the data center equipment cabinet has led many data centers to upgrade from single-phase to three-phase power distribution. Proper three phase power distribution has traditionally meant dividing up the power into multiple branches within the rack power distribution unit (PDU). In this presentation we will explore the advantages of a newer, growing approach to PDU design by means of alternating each phase on a per-receptacle basis instead of a per branch basis.
This innovation provides tangible benefits in the form of simplified phase balancing, shorter cable runs, overall greater efficiencies. Prior to the advent of Server Technology's High Density Outlet Technology PDU (HDOT), Alternating Phase PDU's were impractical to build due to the low outlet density inherent with commercially available outlets. To date, Server Technology has shipped over 43K Alternating Phase HDOT units making it our fastest growing PDU solution.
