Cities can’t buy their way to becoming “smart.” While it’s easy for municipal governments to be attracted to smart city initiatives and other innovative projects, a lot of hard work must be done first to get most out of a its investments. Cities must focus on improving the way they manage data to glean important insights from their smart city initiatives.
As executive director of the Johns Hopkins University Center for Government Excellence, Beth Blauer has witnessed how cities have navigated this new smart city terrain. In this address, she will share insights gained from working with a network 100+ cities across the globe and discuss the importance of focusing on foundational data management practices.
